Set Effective Resolutions You Will Want to Keep

New Year’s Eve is just three weeks away.  I know it seems kind of early to be deciding on resolutions.  Setting effective resolutions can take thought and introspection.  Here are some things to consider if you want to keep your new year’s resolutions.

Are you thinking about your resolutions yet? It's not too early to take stock. Here are some things to consider to make effective resolutions you will want to keep.

This time of year, I always start dreaming of all the amazing things I am going to accomplish in the coming new year.  There is just something exciting and hopeful about the start of a new year, a clean slate.   I want to do this and accomplish that.  I want to reach that goal or this.  The truth is though, I never set effective goals, and I rarely accomplish what I had hoped to.  Possibly because I hope to instead of doing,

Set Effective Resolutions You Will Want to Keep

There are some steps you can take this year when making your resolutions that will make them more effective and easier to keep.

Know Your Why

The typical resolutions are workout more, eat healthier, stop smoking, lose weight.  But do any of those resolutions really resonate with you?  You are much more likely to keep resolutions if you are intentional with them.  Make resolutions, or set goals that truly mean something to you.  If your resolutions mean something to you, they will be easier to stick with and follow through.

One my resolutions for 2018 is to spend more time with my kids, especially my son.  That relationship means a great deal to me, and repairing it requires spending time with him, and earning his trust.  I know that it will take time and effort, but it is something that means a great deal to me.  I am willing to make the effort through 2018 because of how much it means to me.

Write Them Down

Writing down goals makes them real and signifies a commitment to them.  It is like making a promise to yourself.  Once you have your resolutions written down it is the perfect opportunity and place to jot down some of the steps you will take to keep them.

The inside cover of my Erin Condren Lifeplanner™ is the perfect place to write mine.  It is a central location where they won’t get lost.  I will see them several times a day every day so I will always be reminded of them.

Limit Yourself

The beginning of a new year is full of hope and excitement and good intentions.  It is tempting to set ALL the resolutions!  Lose weight! Eat healthier!  Be nicer! Save more money!!  The problem with trying to do it all is there isn’t enough time or energy to do everything and do it all well.

Pick your top three, the ones that mean the most to you, and go with those.  If your resolution is a changed behavior, practicing it will make it routine.  Once it becomes routine, you can choose another goal to take its place, if you want.

Forgive Yourself

Nobody keeps their resolutions every single day of the new year.  Sometimes we stumble, sometimes we fall back into old habits.  You’re only human.  Forgive yourself for the misstep, and go forward doing better, being better.

There is still plenty of time left to sit with your thoughts and hopes for 2018 and be intentional when setting your new year resolutions.  Follow these helpful tips and you will find you are making effective resolutions that you will want to keep.
